Hastings is where Rice Lake flows into the Trent River. When walleye season opens in May, fishermen have to arrive early to get a place on the Hastings bridge. Hastings was originally called Crook’s Rapids and is the location of the first dam constructed in 1838 for the Trent Canal System. Click here for more information.

Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives 14

We are 100 years old and still growing!  The Victoria Museum, Peterborough’s first museum opened in 1896. The Peterborough Centennial Museum Archives (PCMA) opened its doors in 1967, incorporating much of the Victoria Museum’s collection. The PCMA’s collection is the second oldest in Ontario.www.pcma.ca

Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights 16

The Peterborough Summer Festival of Lights is one of this ararea’s shining stars. With entertainment for the whole family, an illuminated boat show at dusk, and fireworks to top the summer evening off, the Festival has become a symbol of summer in the Kawarthas. Scriven Burial Grounds 3

Located southeast of Bailieboro on Scriven Rd. off Lakeview Rd. (Cty. Rd.2). The Pengelley Cemetary is marked by an Ontario Historic Sites BoardPlaque commemorating the burial place of Joseph Scriven, composer of the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. The funeral was held at the home of James Sackville, who lived outside Bewdley on the now Cavan Road, and as Scriven had requested he was buried so that his feet were opposite those of his lost love, Eliza Catherine Roche, that upon their glorious resurrection they might arise facing one another.

Scriven Monument, Bewdley 4

Located in Bewdely at the corner of Rice Lake Dr. and Cty. Rd. 9, the monument was erected in 1919 to the memory of Joseph Scriven writer of the hymn“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. Also, a memorial stone inscribed with the words of the hymn is located in Port Hope Memorial Park. Scriven's actual burial plot in located southeast of Bailieboro.
